Mechanical Rockbolts

Typical Technical Data
Expansion shell anchored rockbolts are the most common form of rockbolt and the most inexpensive.  The bolt is anchored by rotating the bolt which pulls a wedge attached to the end of the bolt into a conical expansion shell.  This forces the shell to expand against and into the wall of the borehole.  This type of bolt is generally suitable for moderately hard to hard rock conditions.

Mechanical Rockbolts:

Steel Quality Designation700 N/mm2
Yield Load, steel140 kN
Steel Diameter16 mm
Ultimate Load, steel180 kN
Ultimate Axial Strain, steel14%
Weight of bolt 2 kg/m
Recommended Borehole Diameter35-38 mm

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

  • Relatively inexpensive

  • provides immediate support after installation

  • bolt can be post-grouted to provide "permanent" support

Disadvantages

  • Limited to use in moderate to hard ground conditions

  • Difficult to install reliably

  • Must be monitored for correct tensioning

  • Loss of support can occur if anchor loosens due to blast vibration, if nut and plate are damaged, or if spalling occurs around collar
